Hydroelectric micro-plants on the Romagna Waterworks

Project concerning the Romagna Waterworks system, to produce energy from renewable sources by installing some hydroelectric micro-plants on the adduction network at the tanks in Forlì Collina, Cesena Cappuccini, Riccione Pariolino, Montalbano and Faenza.

By analyzing the Romagna Waterworks working conditions, the project was aimed to identify the network nodes potentially suitable for hydroelectric production.

It should be highlighted that these are unusual installations, in which the hydroelectric function is fully secondary to the priorities of the waterworks, characterized by extremely variable flow-rates and hydrostatic heads, which are totally atypical for operating an usual hydraulic turbine.

The micro-plants have various installed powers, depending on the hydraulic conditions of the site, between 60 kW and 250 kW, and are currently being produced.

Retarding basin for the historical railway station of Bologna

Safety increasing works for rainwater collection and waste network of Bologna Centrale railway station. New retarding basin at Piazzale Ovest.

The safety increasing works for the rainwater collection and waste network of the historical railway station of Bologna required the construction of a new retarding basin located at Piazzale Ovest.

The area of the new retarding structure is approximately 20,000 square metres.

These works were required according to the results of a study about the causes of the flooding of the High Speed station of Bologna occurred on 14th June 2014: the project envisages the construction of a new terminal collector with a double function, namely retarding and collection basin, receiving the water collected by the existing draining system.

The new collector was sub-horizontal driven by microtunnelling a reinforced concrete pipe of inner diameter 2 metres, for a length of 135 metres, suitable to achieve an accumulation capacity of approximately 450 cubic metres.

The tight operative restrictions due to continuously operating the station did not allow us to make an exit pit for the milling head: consequently, the perforation equipment had to be recuperated backwards, through the only pit, already used for driving the collector.

Down-stream this new collector, a pumping station was built, with three 30 kW submersible electric pumps, a suitable power to regulate outgoing flows-rates of 280 litres per second.

Microtunnelling for remote heating of the town of Forlì

Project for interconnection and development of the Remote Heating network of the town of Forlì. Passing under Piazzale della Vittoria using the microtunnelling technology.

As a part of the Forlì Remote Heating network, two parallel circular vibro-compressed reinforced concrete pipes were installed using the no-dig microtunnelling technology.

These pipes are a protection tube for the Remote Heating pipes and were necessary in order to avoid installing pipes by means of open air excavation works at considerable depths, which would have caused great problems to the town traffic.

The project was the construction of 2 mini-galleries by driving 3 m long pipe sectors, inner diameter 800 mm, for a total length of about 135 metres, at extrados depths ranging from -6.50 metres to -6.00 metres under the road level.

The drilling operation started from a reinforced concrete underground driving chamber of inner size 5.7 x 6.9 metres, at a depth of 7.3 metres, located in Piazzetta Sferisterio; the two pipes reach the end chamber, of net size 4.5 x 4.8 metres and at a depth of 6.9 metres, located in Piazzale della Vittoria.

Transportation of water from water-bed of the town of Forlì

Transportation of water from water-bed of the town of Forlì

Vettoriamento delle acque di falda della Città di Forlì

Transportation of the water from the wells of the town of Forlì to Montaspro.

The project is a part of a wider study of the Romagna waterworks system, aiming to establish an integrated hydraulic model among the infrastructures managed by the producer, Romagna Acque Società delle Fonti, and the infrastructures entrusted to the distributor, HERA.

In particular, for the town of Forlì the project determined the optimal configuration of the network, aiming to make more uniform the quality of the distributed resource, namely the surface water from the Ridracoli reservoir and the aquifer water collected from the wells in the town, in a variable proportion depending on the seasonal conditions.

The project envisages taking all the water collected from the wells of Forlì to the loading basins of Monte Casale; then it will be mixed with the resource from the Ridracoli reservoir, thus avoiding to use it to directly feed some parts of the town waterworks.

For this purpose, some modifications to the existing systems are necessary, in order to transport the resource collected from the Romiti and Pandolfa systems to Montaspro:

  • Operations on the town water-pipe network, in order to separate distribution from adduction and transport the resource for distribution to the Montaspro system;
  • Adjustment of the Romiti and Pandolfa pumping stations, to make them suitable to transfer the instantly produced flow-rate to Montaspro, with inverter-adjustment stabilizing the level of suction basin;
  • Bypass lines to directly feed the town’s elevated tanks from the Monte Casale load basins;
  • Secondary revamping operations of the Romiti and Pandolfa processing plants, reduction of the acoustic impact of the pumping stations, construction of bypass ducts to feed the town tanks during emergencies.

Distribution of the waters from CER in the Montone river area

Multiple distribution system of water from the CER (Emiliano-Romagnolo Canal) – Montone river area in the Municipalities of Forlì and Faenza.

First lot: Primary off-take and distribution works from the CER.

Second lot: Irrigation distribution works in the districts of Villagrappa, San Biagio, San Martino – San Tomè and Basiago.

The project aims to distribute the CER water, with a maximum capacity of 1,490 litres per second.

The First Lot is the structure collecting water from the CER canal and the related pumping station, a ductile cast iron DN 1200 pressure pipe of length 6,200 metres, and an open air accumulation basin of net volume 19,300 cubic metres.

The Second Lot includes the Villanova pumping plant, a ductile cast iron DN 600 pipe of length 3,450 metres and the open air accumulation basin of Villagrappa with a net volume of about 10,000 cubic metres.

The equipment in the pumping plants, including the necessary devices to protect them from any water-hammer phenomena, is hosted inside suitable buildings. Access to the accumulation basis is regulated by an access tower, which constantly keeps the water level stable, thus ensuring suitable piezometric cover to the pressure pipe, also with transitory regimes.

Accumulation basins are equipped with earth embankments and are partially underground, with the bottom at a depth of about 2 metres under the countryside ground and the top of the banks emerging by 2 metres.

By-pass of the Ridracoli Dam deviation gallery

Building of a by-pass of the Ridracoli Dam off-take tunnel in the Municipality of Santa Sofia (FC)

The aim of the operation was to enhance the reliability of the Romagna waterworks by making a bypass of the Ridracoli Dam off-take tunnel, to directly transfer the resource to the water conditioning plant in the territory of Capaccio di Santa Sofia.

According to the project, the Bidente river should be used as an alternative route, after releasing from the dam discharge system the necessary amount of water for the network requirements, estimated as 700 l/s, to be later deviated from the river and sent to the top of the water conditioning plant.

For this reason, the following works were made.

  • Collection crossbar in the bed of the river Bidente, in the position where already is a dyke, after structural consolidation;

  • Off-take structures, with an adduction pumping station with three submersible pumps and a additional bailing pump;

  • Underground settling, accumulation and hydraulic disconnection basin, made of reinforced concrete;

  • Main pumping station inside a suitable control building, boards and transformers room, with three horizontal axis pumps with divided boxes and related control equipment and protections from ramming;

  • Underground DN800 steel pressure pipe for a direct connection to the existing DN1400 pipe at the entrance of the water conditioning plant.
